Welcome to Milblogging.com

Some updates on the Milblog conference
Monday, April 3, 2006, 11:43 AM
I guess I’ll be watching the Milblog conference online from home or the delivery room.  It seems a shame to build up the excitement for several months, only to bail at the last minute and disappoint my millions of sheep. Anyway, since I’m a tech-fashion-blog-whiz, I’ve created a JP replica-robot that will sit in for me.  In fact, this is JP’s replica typing this blog right now.  I’m a lot more…*beep beep*… awesome than the real JP.  I could attend the conference dressed in a Chicken suit, throw eggs at CJ, and make funny farting noises into the microphone, and people in the audience would be like, “Man, that JP’s a genius. Even his robot doesn’t skip a beat.”  Then the people would kill the replica and laugh and when the cops arrived, they’d say, “No worries.  It’s just a robot, officers. Not sure where the red oil is coming from, or why it’s making gurgling noises…”.  Huh…on second thought, maybe it’s not a good idea to send Brad Pitt, I mean, my replica.

Here are some updates from the conference site.

Conference Happenings - The cocktail reception mentioned here is now cancelled and will be replaced by a catered luncheon on the day of the conference (April 22). Details will follow. Apologize for the change of plan, but the luncheon will be great. Thanks again to military.com for hosting this.

Panels in Place - With the addition of two more panelists, the panels for the Milblog Conference are set and we're ready to roll. The new panelists, both OIF Veterans, will be sitting on the Blogging From Theater panel.  Welcome to Fred Minnick of In Iraq for 365 and Michael Fay of Fire and Ice. To view a complete list of panelists, click here.

Colonel David Hunt to Participate in Milblog Conference - Colonel David Hunt, FOXNews Military Analyst, author of They Just Don't Get It: How Washington is Still Compromising Your Safety and What You Can Do About It and blogger will moderate the Blogging From Theater Panel at the Milblog Conference.

New Milblogs Added: March 28th - April 1st, 2006
Saturday, April 1, 2006, 10:39 PM
I admit I’m behind on my Milblogger of the Week column.  That fact is, no one has sent me nominations, so I guess I’ll keep picking my own.  However, you’re more than welcome to submit nominees.  Here’s a little tip though, you can’t submit MIlblogging.com.  Don’t get me wrong, I still get dizzy every time I see myself in the mirror. I’m all for nominating myself, but there’s no way I’m writing about myself, that’s just weird.

Until I get some nominations, read the new Milblogs.  I dare you to nominate some Milblogs. Double-dog dare you. Oh yeah, now what are you gonna do?

Anysoldier and Care Packages: The Link
Friday, March 31, 2006, 02:51 PM
A recent notice went up on Anysoldier.com that says, “In 2½ years AnySoldier.com has had over 5 million visitors and almost 75 million hits. Through us you have supported over 15,000 contacts who have helped about 430,000 troops. Well done!  But, now this web site needs YOUR help.  We don't charge for addresses, we operate strictly on a donation basis.  Donations have been far below what is needed for AnySoldier.com to continue.  Without the needed donations this web site stops.  Soon.

Let me tell you a secret, I participated in Anysoldier, and I got tons of Care Packages in
Afghanistan from strangers.  I also started a blog shortly after joining Anysoldier, and posted some constructive suggestions on what supporters should send in Care Packages. I assure you, despite the blunt rules I posted, I choked down every last piece of beef jerky, gagged on every last morsel of generic (not name-brand) snacks, and even mastered the coloring books and Word Finds intended for 3-year olds and rabbits in my spare time.  I was, and still am, grateful to everyone who took the time to send me anything.

Now get over to Anysoldier.com and see how you can help. Thanks to SK for the tip.

Milblogs in the News: 'Cry Baby' Study Has Blogs Bawling
Thursday, March 30, 2006, 01:03 PM
This week, the blog debate swirling around psychologist Jack Block's controversial study suggesting whiny babies become conservative adults, was featured on Blogophile.

Thoughts from bloggers were featured on the CBS site, too.  Here’s a glimpse of what milblogger Seaspook had to say about the study:

“Anything UC Berkeley comes up with is immediately suspect. If however, the study is valid, it would be an indication that whiny children grow up to be well adjusted adults with a positive outlook on life, while confident kids grow up to be unprincipled, amoral, ranting liberals”

Seaspook’s comment hits it.  I actually have nothing to add.  I think though the real victim here is the children.  Let’s a take moment, and pray in silence...  They’re innocent bystanders in all of this.  I mean, I’m not trying to pretend I was a tough kid growing up, but I never cried all the time, unless of course you call weeping like a schoolgirl during the last season of Saved by The Bell, crying.  And by kid, you a mean 23-year old adult still living at home.

Thanks to Seaspook for the story.

Hate Mail a-Cometh
Thursday, March 30, 2006, 08:02 AM
I’ve received an unusual influx of hate mail lately.  That's cool.  However, I’m warning you now, the next hate mail I receive in my Inbox, I’m posting it along with your email address, first name, last name, and Yahoo! Driving Directions to your Grandma's house.  If you’re anti-war, anti-Bush, and anti-Olsen Twins, I don’t wanna hear it. Really.  It's played out.  I can watch CNN or pick up The WashPo and read about it all day.  Remember, don’t send me hate mail... I’ve never sent hate mail to anyone... well, but that’s only because I still can’t find the email address to Cindy Sheehan, or Michael Moore, or that movie critic who gave "New York Minute" two thumbs down (I'm still devastated).

To my loyal readers: I’ll spare you the hate mail.  Just because you’re handsome, intelligent, fastidiously attentive to grammar details, and a snappy dresser - like I of course am - doesn’t mean you don’t get hate mail.

Seacrest...OUT!

Absent from Milblog Conference
Wednesday, March 29, 2006, 09:57 AM
Many of my readers will be greatly disappointed (sheer pandemonium might be a better description) to learn that I can’t attend this year’s Milblog Conference.  Take a moment, let it all sink in, and breeeeaathe.  Remind yourself, I'm just a blogger...

You’re probably expecting a perfectly good explanation as to why. Well, normally, I’d say something like my private jet is in the shop.  But the truth is: my wife is due with our next baby just before May 1st. I'd try and describe to you what life would be like if I missed the birth, but I expect most of my readers to have a minimum I.Q. of 49 (slightly above a Moron), so I think further explanation isn't required, unless of course, Code Pinkers troll this site.

Anyway, showing up to the conference and acting polite and human, is totally at odds with my normal behavior.  Luckily, you'll never have to see that side of me, which I guess is too bad, since I was raised a gentleman. Cheerio!

Tuesday, March 28, 2006, 12:16 PM
As part of the latest group of milblogs recently listed on Milblogging.com, we got one from Djibouti.  Thanks to kasee267 for submitting it.  A lot of my readers have done hard work finding and submitting milblogs.  I really can’t complain about my readers anymore because you’ve all been doing a great job.  You could send me hate mail saying, “JP, you are a total lame-ass with an I.Q. of 7, who no one likes and your blog is shit and I’d wish you die!”  And I would write back and say, “You’re awesome. Thanks for taking the time to write me. # 7 is my lucky number!”  That’s the truth.  So, again, thanks for all your hard work everyone.   The latest Milblogs are as follows:

Milblogs in the News: The Post and the Whole Picture in Iraq
Monday, March 27, 2006, 01:18 PM
A story today on TMCnet talks about the few news organizations still covering the war in Iraq, and what a lousy job they’re doing.  “The Post's work (and that of other news media in Iraq) draws intense attention and a steady stream of complaints from readers, military and civilian, who say the coverage is excessively negative and too focused on violence.”

I know liberals love The Post.  But really honestly, it sucks.  The Post could only be more liberal if it were printed on welfare stamps and delivered door-to-door by vegans who believe cats and gerbils have rights.  Anyway, military blogger Bill Roggio was also mentioned in the story:

The Pentagon also is reaching out to bloggers writing about the military. Pro-war blogger Bill Roggio was invited late last year to embed with the Marines, and a story in The Post quoting him brought about 100 critical e-mails generated off Roggio's blog, http://www.billroggio.com/ . Roggio was mentioned in the lead paragraph of a Dec. 26 story by Jonathan Finer and Doug Struck, then doing a rotation in Iraq, on the military's efforts to get its story told favorably. Finer and Struck also wrote about the military's controversial Information Operations program, where Iraqi news media are asked to do stories that focus on efforts to help Iraqis' quality of life and to counter insurgents' attempts to influence coverage. Those stories are often backed up by cash payments.

Roggio was furious that he was mentioned in the same story with journalists paid to write favorable pieces. He said it looked like "I must be part of a nefarious scheme by the military to influence the perceptions on
Iraq. All they did was extend an invite that is no different than extending an invite to any reporter. I was invited on my merit. I felt I earned the right to be embedded. I took the risk of leaving my family and job and financing this with donations. Then to see it put in this light, I felt very wronged."

Milblog Conference Update: Conference Kick-Off
Friday, March 24, 2006, 01:45 PM
The great people at Military.com will be sponsoring a cocktail party on the Friday night before the conference.  Regardless of the conference event, cocktail parties are always a good idea.  The thought of meeting all my fans and other bloggers, is kind of scary though.  Let’s be clear, I can’t walk on water, I don’t look like Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise, and I’m really not as big a celebrity as I play on the internet.  But, since most of you don’t know what I look like, I’ll at least wear my ninja outfit ….hey, I wouldn’t want to shatter all your Military-Blogging-Internet dreams about me.

From the Milblog Conference Site:

The fun will begin well before Saturday. Military.com will sponsor a cocktail reception for conference attendees on Friday evening (April 21st), so mark your calendars. Details will be posted soon.

What a great way to kick off conference weekend.

A special thank you to Military.com for hosting this reception.

Milblogs in the News: How it’s Looking. Iraq, three years in.
Wednesday, March 22, 2006, 12:26 PM
In order to mark the three-year anniversary of the war in Iraq, National Review Online asked a group of experts: "What do you consider the most important points to keep in mind when considering Iraq three years after the Coalition invasion?". One of the experts, mentioned milblogs.

Here’s what Jonathan Foreman, had to say:

“Millions more Americans now understand the untrustworthiness and dishonesty of the mainstream media — especially the half a million troops who have served in
Iraq and who have seen their work go unreported or be misrepresented. (You can be sure that you are getting less than half the picture unless you read milblogs and Iraqi blogs and talk to troops who have come back. When was the last time you read about what the Australians or Poles are doing in Iraq? Have you ever heard a network anchor put our casualties in the contexts of other wars, or even auto accident rates in the U.S.?)”

C'mon, after three years in
Iraq, members of the MSM should be asking themselves, “How can we do better”, “Why haven’t we been covering the positive aspects of the war”, and “I’m a man [Anderson Cooper aka the silverpoodle], why do I wear makeup in front of millions of viewers”.  Honestly, I can’t go more than two posts without criticizing the MSM for their lack of positive coverage of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean, how hard can it be to sit behind a desk and criticize people in front of America? It's pathetic.  If all it takes to be a news anchor is to wear makeup, act like a monkey, and say stupid things, sign me up. Though I'd probably get fired after my first day on the job.  I don't wear makeup.  I'm naturally handsome.

New Milblogs Added: March 17th - March 20th, 2006
Tuesday, March 21, 2006, 08:40 AM
None of my Google or Yahoo! News alerts for “milblog” have been very active, so I haven’t had much to report on milblogs in the MSM.  While we’re on the topic of the MSM, I don’t see why anybody would watch CNN for “news”.  Now, don't quote me on this, but according to “The JP Institute for Liberal Studies”, watching CNN will make your brain turn into crap.  And you’ll start growing hair on your palms.  Oh, and you’ll become a lazy blob that makes farting noises every time you talk.  What? Don’t believe me? Turn on CNN for ten minutes. Ten minutes, that’s all.  You’ll see.  That’s just enough time before your brain turns into a stinking pile of human waste...  I’m afraid though you’ll have to learn to type with hairy palms.  But I digress...

Milblog Conference Update: Deb of Marine Corps Moms Joins the Panel
Monday, March 20, 2006, 07:43 PM
Deb from Marine Corps Moms is officially part of the panel of milbloggers at the 2006 Milblog Conference.  How could the conference get any better? Really. How could it?  It’s basically turning out to be bigger than the Academy Awards, but, with talent.  And by talent, I mean, able to hold an intelligent conversation about something other than sunburns and handbags.  Listen, I can’t sing or act or even direct, but then, neither can George Clooney.  Know what I mean?

Here’s an excerpt from the Milblog Conference site:

I'm pleased to announce that Deb from Marine Corps Moms will be a panelist on the Milblogging Family Style panel. We're very glad to have Deb join the cast.

Milblog Conference Update: Venue Announced
Saturday, March 18, 2006, 11:24 PM
If you have nothing to do on April 22nd, you may as well attend the Milblog Conference in Washington, D.C. It’s going to be a major attraction.  I won’t go into details, but I’ll be the one with the large entourage pulling up in the stretch-limo, with paparazzi and four bajillion fans chasing me around the parking lot.  Oh yeah, and I’ll be wearing more bling than P-Diddy at a Diamond Convention.  Hey, I’m a big star.  That’s how I roll...

Here’s an update from the Milblog Conference site:

The Milblog Conference will take place on Saturday, April 22 in Academy Hall at the
AED Conference Center in Washington DC.

Address for the
Conference Center:

1825 Connecticut Ave., NW, 8th Floor
Washington, DC 20009

The
Conference Center is only four blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro Stop. To plan your commute using Metrorail, click here.

And, thess keyboard doesn’t seamn to bek wurkieeng (dammb, greaan beeerr).

Milblogger of the Week: The Online Chaplain
Thursday, March 16, 2006, 04:54 PM
This week’s featured milblogger is The Online Chaplain.  The Chaplain received orders to report to Ft Shelby, Mississippi, with the 1st Brigade Combat Team from Minnesota. He’ll be serving with the 1-125 Field Artillery Unit, who are deploying to Iraq in the Spring of ‘06.

Normally, at this point in my entry is where I write something witty and evil about the “Milblogger of the Week”. However, it’s probably not wise, considering he’s a Chaplain -- and I don’t want to be struck down by lightning while typing this entry. Plus, when the paramedics come to my house, finding me on my couch in nothing but my smoking-Spiderman Underoos (that I haven’t changed in three days), with my hair on fire, and a stupid smirk on my face, would be embarrassing...real, real embarrassing. Shew! Thank Gawd no one has to know about this.

Here’s an excerpt from The Online Chaplain’s blog:

 Since CNN Won't Tell You...

God bless this brave Regiment; God bless the families who dedicated these brave men and women. From the bottom of our hearts we thank the families. They have given us something we will never forget. To the families of those who have given their holy blood for our land, we all bow to you in reverence and to the souls of your loved ones. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They are not dead, but alive, and their souls hovering around us every second of every minute. They will never be forgotten for giving their precious lives. They have sacrificed that which is most valuable. We see them in the smile of every child, and in every flower growing in this land. Let
America, their families, and the world be proud of their sacrifice for humanity and life.

Finally, no matter how much I write or speak about this brave Regiment, I haven’t the words to describe the courage of its officers and soldiers. I pray to God to grant happiness and health to these legendary heroes and their brave families.

NAJIM ABDULLAH ABID AL-JIBOURIMayor of Tall ‘Afar,
Ninewa, Iraq

Thoughts by CJ: Milblog Conference Weeks Away
Wednesday, March 15, 2006, 07:29 PM
I got started writing an entry today about the Milblog Conference in April, but stopped after reading the post over at A Soldier’s Perspective (see below).  The verdict isn’t out yet on whether I can attend, since my wife is due May 1st.  Take a deep breath, don’t worry, you’ll survive without me...Although the odds are the baby will arrive May 1st, if I miss the birth, that would be bad.

The thing about women is, there are two things you must know: 1) never miss the birth of your child, and 2)  99.999% of my readers are women – so I’ll just stop here with my advice on women.  You bet I’m not going to piss off the majority of my readers. And by “majority”, I mean, the crackheads and hausfraus who frequent this site...

Here’s an excerpt from CJ’s post on the Milblog Conference:

If you’re anywhere even close to the vicinity of DC on this day, you HAVE to be there. Anyone worth their weight in salt knows the dangers of putting JP and I together on a panel. We have the great distinction of being the first panel on day one. Now, I think they did this for one of two reasons: 1) Things can only go UP from there or 2) Set the standard for those to follow. I’m thinking the first. However, Andi, in her brilliant foresite, made sure that Matt (from Blackfive), Citizen Smash (from the Indepundit) and John (from The Officer’s Club) were there to keep us under control. Hey someone has to bring the maturity!! If they can’t keep us under control (which I don’t think is possible with our combined power of odious persuasion) LTC (ret) Buzz Patterson will. At least that’s what he thinks, hehe.”

Another Book Review: Rank insiders, firing on all cylinders
Tuesday, March 14, 2006, 08:10 PM
The Financial Express, the only English financial daily in Bangladesh (I know, shocker), reviewed the following books: JARHEAD: A Soldier's Story of Modem War by Anthony Swofford, THE OPERATIVE by Duncan Falconer, AGGRESSOR by Andy McNab, LOVE MY RIFLE MORE THAN YOU: Young, Female & in the US Army by Kayla Williams, and, MY WAR: Killing Time in Iraq by Colby Buzzell.

“If he hadn't quite invented it, Buzzell was a pioneer of what is now familiar as the "milblog", any number of which now flourish. His is exceptionally kood. Particularly, effective are -those postings where he juxtaposes the "bullshit" dispatched by the "embedded" reporters along with what really happened.

To his surprise, once his identity was rumbled, his commanders encouraged Buzzell's milblogging activities ("You seem to have been influenced by Hunter S. Thompson," one of them mildly observed). Why? Because the brass, just like the grunts, resent those chairbound assholes in Washington who, in their ineffable misunderstanding of strategy, launched them on this no-win Iraqi adventure. The milblog, like its far distant progenitor, William Howard Russell's dispatches to The Times in 1855, has changed the nature of war...”

I love it when people from poor countries know more about the war on terror than say, Michael Moore or Cindy Sheehan. And when I say “poor”, I mean so poor that when you ask them where the bathroom is, they say, “fourth bottle on the left”.  Or, when you’re over at their house and you step on the cigarette, they ask, “who turned off the heat?”. Or, when they go to KFC, they lick other people’s fingers… Uh, I really don’t know what those jokes have to do with this entry, but, whatever. It just amazes me that people in countries who have a lot less, still know a lot more. Not more than me, of course, but more than Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan. But then what do Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan really know? They’re so dumb, it takes them 2 hours to watch 60 minutes (Ha! I crack myself up. These jokes remind me of third grade...the best 2 years of my life... of my life.).

Book Review: Saving Babylon by Milblogger Paul Holton
Monday, March 13, 2006, 07:28 AM
The Military Writer’s Society of America has recognized Paul Holton (aka milblogger Chief Wiggles) with their “Humanitarian Award for 2005”.

“Author Paul Holton (Better known by many around the world as “Chief Wiggles”) writes a memoir of his tour of duty in
Iraq, as an interrogator for the U.S. Army, which gives the reader a real inside look at what was and is going on there…”

I even got a signed copy of Saving Babylon in the mail. How cool is that? Pretty damn cool, that’s how cool. Say it: “JP’s cool.”  Bravo, now we may continue…

I don’t like to brag or anything (okay, I do, but that’s beside the point), but when you’re getting signed copies of books in the mail, you’re important.  Don’t worry, someday, I’ll write my own book and mail signed copies to all my adoring fans.  My book, will be about a high school nerd turned action-star-Ninja overnight. Oh, and somewhere in between I’ll write about my beautiful wife and kids, and my Afghanistan deployment, and my untreatable sickness, I mean, respect for the Olsen Twins…

...The name’s P, J-P.

New Milblogs Added: March 5th - March 12th, 2006
Sunday, March 12, 2006, 03:15 PM
This week we’re up to 1,270 military blogs in the database.  To the best of my knowledge, we’re just scratching the surface of milblogs.  With the help of users like kasee267 and a few others, we’ve got more to read.  Thanks kasee267 and everyone else whose helped!

I wish I had more users who submitted milblogs to the database, and who wrote me and told me what a God I am (oh, wait, we'll talk about that later). I’ve submitted about 90 percent of the blogs. What’s my point? Well, the rest of you are lazy. I once had a cat...stay with me...all it did was sleep.  Sleep, sleep, sleep.  Not the cute cuddly 8 to 10 hours of sleep most cats take.  I mean, this cat would lie down in coma-like state in a hidden spot for three days straight while I ran around the house like a lunatic calling its name, and, the only way the way to tell he wasn't dead was to spin him across the floor (several times).  What? What I'd say?  That’s not sleep people, that’s lazy.

Listen, when your biggest contribution to this site is submitting a blog that you already found on this site...you’re lazy.  Ahhh, I feel better now that I got that out.  It's almost lunchtime, I need a nap...

Milblogger Injured: American Soldier
Saturday, March 11, 2006, 05:04 PM
American Soldier’s wife reports that her husband has been injured by an IED. To everyone’s relief, he is okay and recovering.  She writes:

“I want to let everyone know that AS has been injured. He was hurt in an IED attack. It is not life threatening and he should be OK. But he has been injured none the less. He is taking it easy the next few days before he gets further testing to determine the outcome of his injuries. He is not yet sure how this will effect his deployment. However, he is back with his unit but unable to go out on missions. He returned at his own request to be with his fellow soldiers.”

Tell you what, it’s always difficult to get news like this, especially when you’ve been
following a milblogger online.  It’s the news you never wanna hear.  Normally, the news I love to hear is when troops kick some terrorist-ass and  milbloggers report about it, or when they return home safely after finishing a tour, and, also when troops kick some terrorist-ass. Uh, wait, I said that already.  Oh c’mon, who doesn’t love hearing about terrorists getting their asses handed to them?  Unless of course you’re a terrorist, and some U.S. troops just opened up a can of whoop ass on those little Biatches!  Whatever, I'm down with the new lingo since returning home...

Thanks to Kat for the heads up.  If you get a moment, stop by American Soldier and wish them the best.
