Milblog Conference is a success
Saturday, April 22, 2006, 10:40 PM

I barely got anything done today, because I spent most of my day watching the milblog conference online.  It took me a while to figure out why everyone was breakdancing and had blocks for heads on the streaming video. . .Then, uhhh, I realized I had one too many beers.

I’ll admit, this was the first time I’ve ever watched streaming video. . .really. . .what?  I havent’ had this much fun online since I found UrbanDictionary.com. There’s “funny” --- and then there’s CJ --- and then there’s CJ running around the audience to get on camera, or CJ up at the podium asking questions to panelists like, “...we know JP can't be here today... but he'd like to ask, Boxers or briefs?”.  But wait, there's more.  If you joined in the online chat and video, CJ was live-chatting from the conference, giving us play-by-play SMASH drinking-updates:

CJ_ASP (guest): He [SMASH] walked up and started massaging MRS Smash's
back but the Blackfive told him to leave his shoulders alone.  he was confused”.

I’m really feeling the whole milblogging thing even more now.  One thing’s for sure, we need to get a petition to keep CJ blogging.  Something has to be done.  First things first though, "CJ, you got any more stories about SMASH?"

Watch the Milblog Conference Live!
Friday, April 21, 2006, 08:30 PM
The link for the streaming video to the Milblog Conference is now available.  The part of “JP” will be played by “Steve Schippert” of ThreatsWatch.   I’ll be watching from Texas in my Director’s chair with a phone in one ear and my face glued to the computer screen, shouting instructions to Steve,  “Throw the water balloons, now!”    “Cue the Olsen Twins!”  “Start dancing around on stage!”  I don’t remember what else I had planned - had I gone – but I think it involved CJ and personal demonstrations of the Cold-weather and Hot-weather MRE farts, just before the main dish is served.. of course.

Oh, and if you try clicking on the link right now, here’s a newsflash, it’s not active just yet.  It’ll be active by tomorrow…when the conference actually starts.  That’s how streaming video works. It’s a good thing I’m adding that.  Otherwise, you would’ve been staring at a blank screen all this time saying, “Damn, this conference is kinda boring without JP”.

Seriously, I wish I could be attending with all the friends I’ve made over the last 18 months.  And while I’m not going to be there, I’m pretty sure it’ll be entertaining.  As for the new little milblog on the way… nothing yet.  Please Gawd, let them have internet in the hospital so I can watch the conference.

Milblogs in the News: ON THE NET: Bloggers unleash on military brass
Thursday, April 20, 2006, 02:10 PM

Milbloggers are making the news for defending the Iraq war against critics.  It’s funny, a few years back, it seemed like everyone thought blogs were just these cute little purple online diaries kept by people who spoke to plants.  But now, milbloggers are making the news all the time.  The reason people read milblogs is because the mainstream media sucks.  Normally, it’s a bunch of false news reports.  I can’t wait to be a big Hollywood celebrity someday.  The media’s never going to get the news right.  I could be planning to call our baby Joseph, but the evening news will say, "JP of Milblogging.com and wife announce the birth of Elvis Ashley Beavis Borda."   Wow, it’s gonna be great to be famous. . .

Anyway, here are some excerpts from the story in the Grand Forks Herald:

“…Web logs have provided a unique window into the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan, allowing troops to bypass the mainstream media to detail their exploits. But these so-called milblogs are increasingly serving as forums for policy debates, such as the effectiveness of the war strategy or how to deal with Iran's nuclear program.

There are hundreds of mil-blogs, and the Pentagon, which has cautiously supported some of them but also has deep concerns about the ability to control them, recently ordered a top level advisory panel to study the issue.”

You can read the entire story here.

The Milblogopedia Needs Your Help
Wednesday, April 19, 2006, 09:19 PM
I like to keep with the ultra-cool cutting-edge theme I’ve created on this site, and pretty much in everything I do, from taking a nap to shopping for groceries.  I always look good doing it.  With my ongoing mission to revolutionize the Milblogging world and ultimately get a dinner appointment with the Olsen Twins, I am writing this post today asking for some “words” and “definitions” to add to the Milblogopedia.  I realize the word “Milblog” has already been listed, but you can add multiple definitions for each word.  You can also add definitions for words like “MSM”, “Media”, “blogs”…you see where I’m going with this?

I realize not all of you are as good-looking and witty as I am, but give it a try.  You never know.  You can at least try to be funny.  Being as good-looking as me, might be a bit harder.  Unless of course, you pay for reconstructive surgery to make yourself look like Brad Pitt. Get some pectoral and bicep muscle implants.  And get fitted for a wig that gives you James Bond-like hair.  Damn, I shouldn’t blog while I’m taking medication for allergies. It makes you say the weirdest things.

Hopefully, when I wake up tomorrow morning my inbox will be flooded with all sorts of new terms for the online Milblogopedia like, “jerkface”, “egomaniac”, “donkey” and "drop-dead".  No time to be selective, I’ll still add them.

Milblogger of the Week: GX Down Range
Tuesday, April 18, 2006, 09:27 PM
This week’s milblog of the week comes from an unlikely source, an embedded reporter Chris West, who writes GX Down Range.  Up until now, I’ve taken a lot cheap shots at reporters, but Chris’ writing on the 1/34th Red Bulls is a great read.  Also, I’m pretty sure he’s pro-military and pro-military.com/milblogging.com since GX originally sponsored the Milbloggies, published stories about military blogs, helped to design the original Milblogging.com logo, and they have a Milblogging.com banner on their site.  The website also has great photographs with each entry, that readers and family of the Red Bulls can easily view.

Now the only real question, has my baby arrived yet…no, wait…ummm,..I mean, how’s the writing?  Here’s an excerpt:

 “...
I was kneeling on the same ground that Abraham had kneeled on, supplicating himself to the will of God. I could feel the tide of history from those ancient days all the way to the current day where in this same land, a war was raging. A war that, to my mind, was a conflict between tolerance and hatred, between two cultures—one that accepted and welcomed different faiths and beliefs and another that was dedicated to wiping that acceptance from the face of the earth. I was keenly aware of the sacrifice being made by the Soldiers around me; these good men and women who had dedicated themselves to making this world a better place; these brave souls who were willing to leave their families behind and come to this barren place to risk their lives in the service of a higher cause.

New Milblogs Added: April 8th - April 14th, 2006
Monday, April 17, 2006, 01:49 PM
The milblogs below, include a good mix of milbloggers.   Well, not all of them are the typical person on the deployment. There are veterans, Coast Guard, an embedded reporter, military supporters and much much more.  The toughest part of writing up things to say about the new milblogs added once or twice a week, is trying not to repeat something I already wrote before.  Let’s see. . .hmmmm. . . how about, Milblogs KICKASS! Yeah! I haven’t said that before, have I?

Milblog Conference Update: Friday Fun
Saturday, April 15, 2006, 11:55 PM
This Milblog Conference is almost certainly going to be the best event this year. Of course, just slightly below watching the delivery of my son being born in the next couple weeks.  However, I must note, I've lost track of a lot of things including the Milblog Conference, since the launch of the new Olsen Twins internet advice column.  Those little troll dolls are marketing geniuses.

Anyway, as far as I know, the Conference is still going on April 22nd in D.C., Military.com is sponsoring the whole affair, and there are all sorts of activities going on before and after.

Here’s the latest update from the Milblog Conference site:

“On Friday evening, April 21, we're planning an informal meet-up at Pitchers Lounge, which is located inside of the Marriott Key Bridge Hotel. For those of you who can make it, come on over. We'll be there from
7:00 - ????

There will also be an announcement soon regarding a gathering that will take place on Saturday evening, post-conference.”

Milblog Conference Update: Only 10 Days Away!
Thursday, April 13, 2006, 04:16 PM

I’m sure most of you won’t get the Boohbah joke, but GunnNutt has posted a story about the Milblog Conference, which includes me (played by Boohbah).  I’ll admit. It’s funny, despite that I grunt, squeak, burp, and fart.  Sorry, that happens every time I eat Taco Bell.   If I find some time this week, I’ll update this entry with pictures from the original Boohbah in Afghanistan.

Here’s an excerpt from the story:

“...Well, one thing I know for sure - JP made this one in his own image and smell. Jeeeesh! Good thing we didn't eat the anything out of the garbage. I believe he's going to win any contest with
CJ in this odoriferous category.

Funky smells aside, the wee "JP" is a laugh riot! I haven't a clue what he's talking about, but the way he says things with those grunts, squeaks, burps, farts and insane music is bound to have us all in stitches on the 22nd."

Thanks to SK for the tip.

Milblogger of the Week: AfghaniDan
Wednesday, April 12, 2006, 10:47 PM
This week’s Milblogger of the Week is AfghaniDan.  CAPT Dan is a U.S. Marine deployed to...umm...uhhh...hold on, I know this one...Egypt? NO?! Oh, Afghanistan!  CAPT Dan describes his blog as, A young man's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.”  This milblog really takes me back.  I remember a time not too long ago, when a young handsome man with the charm of James Bond, the reflexes of a deadly cobra, and the muscles of Arnold Scwharzenegger was deployed to Afghanistan.  He posted dazzling photographs of a far far away country, and wrote enhanting tales of care packages and desert missions….hmmm…wait…I know this one, too!... I’m talking about... myself! Damn, don’t you feel dumb?

Here’s an excerpt from AfghaniDan’s blog (lots and lots of great photos with stories):

“…If you're looking for the authentic Soviet-architecture-meets-central-Asian-construction motif, it's hard to top eastern
Afghanistan. This is the back of Jalalabad airport's hanger, where (sigh) the bazaar was once held on Saturdays. It's since been shut down due to some...improprieties.”

Updates to Milblogging.com
Tuesday, April 11, 2006, 03:04 PM
It’s been awhile since I’ve made updates to Milblogging.com.  There’s already a kajillion reasons to love Milblogging.com, now, make it a kajillion-and-three.  Oh, and if you find a bug, I mean Easter Egg, please use the Contact form to report it.  Here’s a summary of the biggest changes:

Milblogopedia

Write your own definitions for the world of miltary blogs.  To add a word, go here and submit the Word, the Definition, an Example, and an author’s name.  For example,  the word “Milblog”.

Word : Milblog
Description :
Military Blog. Weblogs written by military bloggers.
We don't need more sissy reporters at the front. Just tell those pansies in the mainstream media to copy/paste from the milblogs.
By :
KlubMarcus over at UrbanDictionary.com

Also, any time you’re reviewing a milblog on this site, and the milblog mentions a term in the Milblogopedia, the word will be highlighted.  Click the word, and it will jump you to the definition in the Milblogopedia.  I realize we need more blogging-terms like Milblogopedia like we need brain-eating cannibals, but it seemed appropriate.

Recently Updated

Now you can see which military blogs have been recently updated.  There’s a chart on the right sidebar, a link at the top of the page in the Search box, and a link in the More Milblogs section (on the left sidebar).  I guess if you still can’t find it after putting it in all those places, you’re out of luck. It’s also updated twice a day, or whenever I feel like it.

Add/View Comments to Military Blogs

If you’re a Milblogging.com registered member, you can leave comments for each military blog listed in the database.  Kinda like a Book Review.  Simply preview the milblog, and underneath the Gender box you’ll see an Add/View comments link. I haven’t written out the Guidelines, but use common sense.  It allows you to review the military blog and leave a comment for other readers to get an idea of what people think.  You know? Thumbs up or thumbs down. I’m sure as charming and delightful as I am, not everyone agrees with me. So, you can provide an honest review of my blog by going here, then click the Add/View Comments link. Remember, you must be signed in to use this feature.

Advanced Search

You can now search the actual content in milblogs that are listed in the database. That means, you can search by the Post Title or the last 5 Posts. This makes it easy to see whose talking about your blog in the milblog community.  For example, if you enter the title of your blog in the Search box, and click Find you'll see what other blogs are talking about you.  Try it.  You can use the Search box at the top of the site to automatically search the Post Titles and Posts, along with everything else.  At some point, I think visitors were getting fed up with the Search since it really only queried the blog description. Now, it searches everything. Why I didn’t do this before, I have no idea.

Which Military Blog do you read regularly...and why?
Monday, April 10, 2006, 02:43 PM
If by some chance you read this blog, go ahead and leave a comment below about your favorite military blog on the internet and why.  From what I’ve seen in the comments, it’s usually easier for me to solve a differentiating-algebraically-complicated function than it is to get readers to leave comments.

I think I’ll start it off: Love from the Latrine is one of my favorites.  Why? Because it’s funny. Not like watching a CNN broadcast-funny, but ha-ha funny.  The cool part about the blog is that the author incorporated photography.  Now, before you run off and start reading Love from the Latrine to your kids, keep in mind the author rarely posts, it’s Military College Humor, and uh… the subject matter is about latrines.

Alright, it’s your turn. Go ahead and do the right thing...Leave a comment about some of the milblogs you read.

Milblog Conference Update: Luncheon Information
Monday, April 10, 2006, 01:09 AM
Every time I write about the Milblog Conference (or “The Ultimate Meeting of the Minds”, as I like to call it) I get a little sad.  Although I can’t attend, I plan to watch it online. So, if you’re attending and you’re a Milblogging.com fan, do something big to get noticed so I can watch it online.  Make your strengths shine.  Like, if you’ve got a nice voice, shout: “I love Milblogging.com! Whoo-hoo! Milblogging.com is the Best! Bwwwaaahaa!” -- every time one of the Panelists start talking.  Oh, and then start spitting and foaming from the mouth.  Take my word for it, that’ll make me smile.  If you’re lucky, a few people will clap and the conference will move forward.  If you’re unlucky, you’ll spend a few hours in jail.  Uh..unless you consider jail a lot of fun, then you’re real lucky.

Luncheon Update:

Military.com will host a luncheon for attendees of the Milblog Conference. The luncheon will take place at Jurys Washington Hotel, which is only a couple of blocks away from the AED Conference Center, venue for the Milblog Conference.

Go here for more information on the Milblog Conference.

New Milblogs Added: April 3rd - April 6th, 2006
Sunday, April 9, 2006, 12:27 AM
Yep, more Milblogs to read.  I was reading some Milblog the other day at home… at the same time, my wife accidentally turned on CNN.  The next thing I know, my laptop hopped up off my desk with Xena-like finesse.  Then,  with a piercing-scream, my laptop landed a single-finger punch to the T.V’s Power button ending the CNN broadcast.  It all happened so fast.  True story. I swear.

Milblogs in the News: YouTube Offers Soldier’s Eye View of Iraq War
Thursday, April 6, 2006, 11:40 AM
From MediaShift journalist Mark Glaser, “If you’ve been paying attention online and in the blogging world, you’ll know that soldiers have offered some of the most gripping first-hand accounts of the war, keeping daily weblogs, posting photos and even video. So it was no surprise when a friend pointed me to a relatively new site called YouTube and showed me what looked like videos shot by American soldiers of live combat in Iraq.”

In his post, Mark even spoke with Colby Buzzell, the BlogFather himself, about the authenticity of the well-produced footage:
One military blogger, Colby Buzzell, whose My War blog has been turned into a book, told me that he thought these videos on YouTube were authentic, based on his experience in Iraq, and he had seen some of the same videos online at other sites. As for the reaction from the military brass, Colby told me “they probably don’t even know it’s going on — they have other things to worry about.”

Maaaan,
I wish I had a title like BlogFather.  Maybe it’s because I’d just like to finish all of my blog entries and emails that way so readers would always know what  a 24-7 ultra-cool hardcore-s-o-b I really am.  I mean, like when you read my blog you would be shaking and weeping because it would hurt to be in the presence of my greatness.  I could write about my trip to the refridgerator, and all my readers would be like, did you see what the BlogFather did today? Only, when you write your friends, your keyboard would catch on fire from all the tears you shed, and the subject of your email would look something like this from all the shaking: “thek Blokhgfathher wemt t;lko the refffriiddddgerator.”  Don’t worry, I still do the same thing every time I visit Colby's blog.  I'm guessing it's normal...

Milblogging.com Hits One Hundred…BILLION Milblogs
Wednesday, April 5, 2006, 10:36 AM
I have come one step closer to my goal of one million…ahem…(placing pinky finger to corner of my mouth)…I mean, one hundred…BILLION MILBLOGS in the Milblogging.com database.  I’m so close.  So close! Go ahead and laugh at me.  1,303 really isn’t that far off.  At least, that’s what my five years in eighth grade math tell me.  And since most people can’t count past 49 (the I.Q. of Anderson Cooper), I really have nothing to prove.

Milblogger of the Week: JusticeSoldier.com
Tuesday, April 4, 2006, 11:26 AM
This week’s featured milblogger is Troy of JusticeSoldier.com.  He’s an Infantryman with the 1/34th Brigade Combat Team getting ready to begin his tour in Iraq.  He has a Criminal Justice Degree.  And he's working on his masters with a focus in Counter Terrorism...

I was thinking (Yes, I do that from time to time), if you want a tough name for a milblog, it’s safe to say JusticeSoldier.com wins hands-down as the world’s best name for a milblog.  Most of you don’t’ know this, but the original name for this blog was
pretty kickass, too.  Three words: The Ninja Terminator.  The only way my milblog could’ve been more testosterone-fueled was if I posted pictures of me swallowing live Camel Spiders.  Take it from me; the best blogs are ones with cool names. Blackfive.net.  Milblogging.com.  365 and a Wakeup.  Milblogging.com.  Midnight in Iraq.  Milblogging.com.  JusticeSoldier.com.  Milblogging.com…. Whaaat? It was worth a shot.  Bribes, amazing good-looks, and begging haven’t worked to get me nominated for anything...maybe hypnosis will…

Here’s an excerpt from JusticeSoldier.com’s blog:

As most of you know, I have been attending my Graduate Studies at night for a year and a half now.  I am currently one class shy of my Master’s degree in Counter-Terrorism.  This fascinating field has educated me more than I could have imagined, allowing me to see the current War in Iraq, and the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) for its realities, not the bullshit coverage we all see on the nightly news.  Our current state of affairs is the latest chapter in the epic campaign of good versus evil, of right versus wrong.  I am entering into this battle in full conscious of my decision and what I have volunteered for on behalf of this Greatest of Nations.  Iraq was the right thing to do, and the fight is worth it.

Some updates on the Milblog conference
Monday, April 3, 2006, 11:43 AM
I guess I’ll be watching the Milblog conference online from home or the delivery room.  It seems a shame to build up the excitement for several months, only to bail at the last minute and disappoint my millions of sheep. Anyway, since I’m a tech-fashion-blog-whiz, I’ve created a JP replica-robot that will sit in for me.  In fact, this is JP’s replica typing this blog right now.  I’m a lot more…*beep beep*… awesome than the real JP.  I could attend the conference dressed in a Chicken suit, throw eggs at CJ, and make funny farting noises into the microphone, and people in the audience would be like, “Man, that JP’s a genius. Even his robot doesn’t skip a beat.”  Then the people would kill the replica and laugh and when the cops arrived, they’d say, “No worries.  It’s just a robot, officers. Not sure where the red oil is coming from, or why it’s making gurgling noises…”.  Huh…on second thought, maybe it’s not a good idea to send Brad Pitt, I mean, my replica.

Here are some updates from the conference site.

Conference Happenings - The cocktail reception mentioned here is now cancelled and will be replaced by a catered luncheon on the day of the conference (April 22). Details will follow. Apologize for the change of plan, but the luncheon will be great. Thanks again to military.com for hosting this.

Panels in Place - With the addition of two more panelists, the panels for the Milblog Conference are set and we're ready to roll. The new panelists, both OIF Veterans, will be sitting on the Blogging From Theater panel.  Welcome to Fred Minnick of In Iraq for 365 and Michael Fay of Fire and Ice. To view a complete list of panelists, click here.

Colonel David Hunt to Participate in Milblog Conference - Colonel David Hunt, FOXNews Military Analyst, author of They Just Don't Get It: How Washington is Still Compromising Your Safety and What You Can Do About It and blogger will moderate the Blogging From Theater Panel at the Milblog Conference.

New Milblogs Added: March 28th - April 1st, 2006
Saturday, April 1, 2006, 10:39 PM
I admit I’m behind on my Milblogger of the Week column.  That fact is, no one has sent me nominations, so I guess I’ll keep picking my own.  However, you’re more than welcome to submit nominees.  Here’s a little tip though, you can’t submit MIlblogging.com.  Don’t get me wrong, I still get dizzy every time I see myself in the mirror. I’m all for nominating myself, but there’s no way I’m writing about myself, that’s just weird.

Until I get some nominations, read the new Milblogs.  I dare you to nominate some Milblogs. Double-dog dare you. Oh yeah, now what are you gonna do?
