Hot Milblog News: Australian Army bans soldiers from writing blogs
Sunday, December 10, 2006, 12:30 PM
(Courier Mail) THE Australian Defence Force has banned soldiers from writing online journals and has deleted blogs from troops serving in Iraq.

Critics say the soldiers are being denied the very freedoms they are fighting for.

The blogs were destroyed in September, hours after pictures of Australian soldiers playing with guns surfaced on the internet in the days before the inquiry into Private Jake Kovco's death in Baghdad.

Australia's leading defence think-tank, a civil libertarian and an internet expert have blasted the move as heavy-handed, saying it denied freedom of speech and destroyed Australian history.

"This shows how far behind the times the ADF is," Australian Council for Civil Liberties president Terry O'Gorman said.

"If the American army allows blogs, why doesn't the Australian army? If it does not pose a security threat, why are these soldiers being denied the rights of democracy that they are fighting for?"

What Milbloggers are Saying - University of Oklahoma: Milblogs do not pose a security threat
Saturday, December 9, 2006, 02:45 PM
(gwot dot us) After taking a break from the ISG report I started surfing the web and ran across a pdf document of a study of milblogs. University of Oklahoma students completed a study on a few key aspects of milblogs. The areas studied were: 1) Content of milblogs communicating about the war in Iraq to determine what milblogs have to say about the military, 2) The emotional content of milblog messages, 3) The effects of milblogs on users, and 4) How milblogs communicate (credibility of their message).

Their findings on what milbloggers have to say about the military...

Milbloggers on the Radio: Life After War: Colby Buzzell, Killing Time in Iraq
Saturday, December 9, 2006, 03:26 AM
Radio Allegro has a radio interview with Milblogger Colby Buzzell.

I don't know the first thing about Podcasts, but I think you might need to download QuickTime or iTunes to listen to the audio interview.  You'd think holding your laptop to your ear would help, but I didn't have any luck. Odds are screaming at your computer like a teenage girl doesn't work either...Yes, I tried that, too.

I even tried wearing an aluminum foil beanie...I still haven't heard the Podcast, but at least I stopped the brain-control rays. Shhhhhhhhhh, they're everywhere...

Thanks to GiLoisLane for the tip.

The 2006 Weblog Awards: Best Military Blog Finalists Announced
Thursday, December 7, 2006, 02:50 PM

Below is a list of Finalists for this year's 2006 Weblog Awards.  It’s a great list.  And I must say, congratulations to this year’s newcomer 1SG Troy Steward who writes the most excellent military blog Bouhammer’s Afghanistan Blog.  I also must say congrats to my pal Matt of Blackfive who made the list of Finalists for the third straight year.  Blackfive even won the 2006 Weblog Awards Military Blog category when it started in 2004 and also won the U.S. Military Veteran’s category here on Milblogging.com last year.

Matt of Blackfive seems to show up everywhere and it's well-deserved...I’m pretty sure you could run a contest to see who is the best actor in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", and somehow Matt would end up on the list.

From the 2006 Weblog Awards:

Best Military Blog

American Soldier
Bouhammer's Afghanistan Blog
Blackfive
Grey Eagle, A Female Soldier
Michael Yon
Mudville Gazette
Neptunus Lex
Op-For
Sgt. Hook
SMASH

And don’t forget once the 2006 Weblog Awards are over, we’ll be hosting the 2006 Milbloggies here on Milblogging.com which will be presented at this year's Milblog Conference in May.

UPDATE - Dec 8, 2006

Milblogs in the News: Valour-IT, Milblogs Give Hundreds of Laptops to Wounded Soldiers
Thursday, December 7, 2006, 08:44 AM
(MediaShift)  As I sit here and type this blog post, I pause for a moment to consider how important my fingers and hands are to me as a blogger and writer. If I should be injured or lose the use of my hands in some awful accident, what would I do?

That hypothetical situation is very real for some American soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, where body armor helps protect them from getting killed from the blasts of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) — but injuries to extremities are common. In the summer of 2005, when Army Captain Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss, a military blogger, was severely injured by such an IED, he asked his blog audience to help him get voice-to-text software, Dragon Naturally Speaking, for his laptop.

FOX 17 News: Best of the Web - Military Blogs
Tuesday, December 5, 2006, 06:53 AM
Milblogging.com was featured on FOX 17 News during their "Best of the Web" segment.

The website states:

"FOX 17 News At Ten wants to hear from you! Tell us about interesting web sites that you've found while surfing the web! We might mention it on Friday nights during our "Best of the Web" segment on FOX 17 News At Ten!"

Past websites featured include: craigslist, car and driver, google rss feeds, and more.  I’m actually honored, since it wasn’t me this time who suggested the website.  And yet, Milblogging.com was somehow still featured on FOX 17.  Seriously, this is one step up from having imaginary friends.  I’m not saying I have imaginary friends, but if you suddenly find me yelling at you during the Milblog Conference when you sit down next to me, chances are you just sat down on my inivisble pal...

Okay, maybe I was lying...so I have an imaginary friend.  What? Just remember, human friends come and go - "Chuckles" (my half clown, half cat friend) is forever.

Military Blogs listed in The World Almanac 2007
Thursday, November 30, 2006, 02:36 AM
Military blogs are featured in the 2007 edition of The World Almanac and Book of Facts.  I'm a little older now, but this is so cool.  And I don’t even know the definition of the word "cool" anymore at my age, unless of course it means being listed in The World Almanac...and being able to scale high walls like a ninja with only my fingers...

And being able to lift large objects many times my own weight over my head.  Like small cars.  Helicopters, too.  Even wild bears.

(The World Almanac) The special feature in The World Almanac 2007, “Blogs From Soldiers and Their Families: Voices of Service to
America,” featured several bloggers. Of them, Arnold Strong is currently serving in Afghanistan and “Buck Sargent” is still serving as a NCO in Baghdad.

If you’d like to read other blogs by military servicepersons and their families, J.P. Borda's milblogging.com is a great place to start. By using the “advanced search” function, you can browse blogs by gender, military branch and relationship to the service (mother, father, soldier), and country of origin.

Site Update: Become a Milblogging Featured Member
Tuesday, November 28, 2006, 05:56 AM
Are you a Milblogging user? Do you have favorite milblogs? Just update your Milblogging account, add a photo, and a bio, and you could be featured right here on Milblogging.com.  Send me an email if you have any questions.

Yes, Milblogging fans, you’re reading that correctly, Christmas has come early this year.  Now, I don’t want to tell Santa how to do his job, but if you put anything on your Holiday Wish List, becoming a featured member here on Milblogging should be somewhere on that list. I put my wish of being featured, right above a Sony Playstation 3 and a 42-inch Plasma TV.  But that’s just me.  And in two years of milblogging, I’ve never been disappointed come Christmas morning.  Last year, my top wish was an autographed photo of myself.  Poster-size.  It’s so awesome.  And then some.

Milblogs in the News: From the Heart of Battle
Sunday, November 26, 2006, 01:46 PM
(The Hartford Courant) Sent from Baghdad to Farmington in 2003, the e-mail begins: "Dear Mom," and then Tanya Simmons, who served in Iraq with the 143rd Military Police Company, writes about clouds:

"As I was walking to the showers, I saw clouds for the first time in about seven months. It's crazy to think that something like clouds could brighten your day, but I am telling you first-hand that I had a much happier day now that I have reintroduced clouds to my life."

Is there anything more compelling than correspondence home from the front?

And in this war, evocative writing from harm's way has expanded from cherished handwritten letters to more-frequent e-mails and military blogs, or milblogs, that chronicle personal accounts of the war while skirting military censorship. Many are poignant, even poetic.

Milblogs in the News: Saying a digital 'thanks' to the troops
Friday, November 24, 2006, 12:34 PM
(The Examiner)  Despite many problems facing our nation at home and abroad, we Americans have a great deal to be thankful for as we reflect on the meaning of Thanksgiving this week. We are living in the most technologically advanced, free and open society that has ever existed. Our entrepreneurial culture has produced incredible advances in medicine, telecommunications and virtually every other area of human endeavor.

But none of this would have been possible were it not for the stalwart defenders of liberty who, generation after generation, bravely marched off to battle beneath the Stars and Stripes. Our debt to them can never be repaid.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Project Valour IT raises money to purchase voice-activated laptops for wounded service members returning home from
Afghanistan and Iraq. Nearly 600 laptops have already been distributed to patients recuperating at the nation’s military hospitals, including Walter Reed Army Medical Center here in Washington. The Military Order of the Purple Heart has also extended the laptop program to forgotten veterans from previous wars who would benefit from having a voice-activated computer.

Milblogger in the News: Web site wants every name listed of those killed in Iraq
Wednesday, November 22, 2006, 11:23 PM
My good buddy CJ of the milblog A Soldier’s Perspective was recently in the news.  What CJ is doing is amazing.  Read below.

(Army Times) Master. Sgt. CJ Grisham didn’t like the wording of a news report when CBS cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, “along with a soldier,” had been killed in an attack in
Iraq.

“I got so angry,’” Grisham said. “I was yelling at the TV: ‘He has a name!”

He wants to make sure it doesnt happen again.

Grisham launched a Web site, http://www.TheyHaveNames.com, to honor the memory of every last service member who has died in
Iraq or Afghanistan. Rather than linking to newspaper stories or Defense Department press releases, he hopes to call the families and friends of each person and tell the stories through their eyes. The story of Capt. James A. Funkhouser, a commander in 1st Battalion., 12th Inf. Regiment — the soldier who died with the journalists May 29 — was the first story to go up on the site.

2006 Weblog Awards: Best Military Blog
Tuesday, November 21, 2006, 11:58 PM
Nominations are open for the 2006 Weblog Awards, including Best Military Blog.

If any of you actually read this section of this website (Hi Mom), feel free to nominate Milblogging.com for a 2006 Weblog Award.

If I receive even one nomination, I’m pretty sure I would explode from happiness. I’m serious...One moment I would be sitting here thinking nobody loves me and crying beneath my desk in a fetal position, and the next moment “BIFF! BAM! KAPOW!” I’d start dancing around the office, running into people yelling “Get some! GET SOME!”.  And then after five minutes I’d just sit back down at my desk trying to go on like nothing happened.

Oh, and don’t forget, the 2006 Milbloggies are going to happen right here on Milblogging in December.  The Awards will be presented at this year’s 2006 Milblog Conference by yours truly and my pal CJ of A Soldier's Perspective, followed by 120-minutes of home video of me growing up as a kid.

More milblogs were added to the Milblogging database last week, most of which have been claimed by their owners.  You’d be surprised how easy it is to claim a blog.  It’s actually pretty easy and now most of the bugs have been fixed.   Which is cool and all, because the first Design I put together for claiming a blog involved publicly admitting The Olsen Twins are the greatest actors of all-time and sending me wads of cash.  Hey, at least that plan was bug free.

Milblogs in the News: Military bloggers have immediate, firsthand perspectives on war
Monday, November 20, 2006, 05:58 AM
(Belleville News-Democrat) If Vietnam was the first television war, Iraq might be the first Internet war.

Blurry, pixilated footage of attacks in
Iraq get posted on YouTube, the video Web site, offering an unfiltered glimpse into the war.

The blogosphere offers its own, if slightly less dramatic, window. A subset of blogs deals almost exclusively with the war and a significant number are written and maintained by soldiers in the conflict, which has to be a first for war reportage.

Firsthand accounts of wars tend to trickle out, in magazine or book form, months after the events being chronicled. The war blogs offer more immediate feedback.

This immediacy may be changing. Just recently, the Army News Service reported on a Virginia National Guard unit that has been monitoring official and unofficial Web sites for what the military calls operational security violations - information that may help the enemy.
