Critics say the soldiers are being denied the very freedoms they are fighting for.
The blogs were destroyed in September, hours after pictures of Australian soldiers playing with guns surfaced on the internet in the days before the inquiry into Private Jake Kovco's death in Baghdad.
Australia's leading defence think-tank, a civil libertarian and an internet expert have blasted the move as heavy-handed, saying it denied freedom of speech and destroyed Australian history.
"This shows how far behind the times the ADF is," Australian Council for Civil Liberties president Terry O'Gorman said.
"If the American army allows blogs, why doesn't the Australian army? If it does not pose a security threat, why are these soldiers being denied the rights of democracy that they are fighting for?"

I don't know the first thing about Podcasts, but I think you might need to download QuickTime or iTunes to listen to the audio interview. You'd think holding your laptop to your ear would help, but I didn't have any luck. Odds are screaming at your computer like a teenage girl doesn't work either...Yes, I tried that, too.
I even tried wearing an aluminum foil beanie...I still haven't heard the Podcast, but at least I stopped the brain-control rays. Shhhhhhhhhh, they're everywhere...
Thanks to GiLoisLane for the tip.

Below is a list of Finalists for this year's 2006 Weblog Awards. It’s a great list. And I must say, congratulations to this year’s newcomer 1SG
Matt of Blackfive seems to show up everywhere and it's well-deserved...I’m pretty sure you could run a contest to see who is the best actor in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", and somehow Matt would end up on the list.
From the 2006 Weblog Awards:

That hypothetical situation is very real for some American soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, where body armor helps protect them from getting killed from the blasts of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) — but injuries to extremities are common. In the summer of 2005, when Army Captain Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss, a military blogger, was severely injured by such an IED, he asked his blog audience to help him get voice-to-text software, Dragon Naturally Speaking, for his laptop.

The website states:
"FOX 17 News At Ten wants to hear from you! Tell us about interesting web sites that you've found while surfing the web! We might mention it on Friday nights during our "Best of the Web" segment on FOX 17 News At Ten!"
Past websites featured include: craigslist, car and driver, google rss feeds, and more. I’m actually honored, since it wasn’t me this time who suggested the website. And yet, Milblogging.com was somehow still featured on FOX 17. Seriously, this is one step up from having imaginary friends. I’m not saying I have imaginary friends, but if you suddenly find me yelling at you during the Milblog Conference when you sit down next to me, chances are you just sat down on my inivisble pal...
Okay, maybe I was lying...so I have an imaginary friend. What? Just remember, human friends come and go - "Chuckles" (my half clown, half cat friend) is forever.

Yes, Milblogging fans, you’re reading that correctly, Christmas has come early this year. Now, I don’t want to tell Santa how to do his job, but if you put anything on your Holiday Wish List, becoming a featured member here on Milblogging should be somewhere on that list. I put my wish of being featured, right above a Sony Playstation 3 and a 42-inch Plasma TV. But that’s just me. And in two years of milblogging, I’ve never been disappointed come Christmas morning. Last year, my top wish was an autographed photo of myself. Poster-size. It’s so awesome. And then some.

"As I was walking to the showers, I saw clouds for the first time in about seven months. It's crazy to think that something like clouds could brighten your day, but I am telling you first-hand that I had a much happier day now that I have reintroduced clouds to my life."
Is there anything more compelling than correspondence home from the front?
And in this war, evocative writing from harm's way has expanded from cherished handwritten letters to more-frequent e-mails and military blogs, or milblogs, that chronicle personal accounts of the war while skirting military censorship. Many are poignant, even poetic.

But none of this would have been possible were it not for the stalwart defenders of liberty who, generation after generation, bravely marched off to battle beneath the Stars and Stripes. Our debt to them can never be repaid.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Project Valour IT raises money to purchase voice-activated laptops for wounded service members returning home from

(Army Times) Master. Sgt. CJ Grisham didn’t like the wording of a news report when CBS cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, “along with a soldier,” had been killed in an attack in
“I got so angry,’” Grisham said. “I was yelling at the TV: ‘He has a name!”
He wants to make sure it doesnt happen again.
Grisham launched a Web site, http://www.TheyHaveNames.com, to honor the memory of every last service member who has died in

If any of you actually read this section of this website (Hi Mom), feel free to nominate Milblogging.com for a 2006 Weblog Award.
If I receive even one nomination, I’m pretty sure I would explode from happiness. I’m serious...One moment I would be sitting here thinking nobody loves me and crying beneath my desk in a fetal position, and the next moment “BIFF! BAM! KAPOW!” I’d start dancing around the office, running into people yelling “Get some! GET SOME!”. And then after five minutes I’d just sit back down at my desk trying to go on like nothing happened.
Oh, and don’t forget, the 2006 Milbloggies are going to happen right here on Milblogging in December. The Awards will be presented at this year’s 2006 Milblog Conference by yours truly and my pal CJ of A Soldier's Perspective, followed by 120-minutes of home video of me growing up as a kid.

Blurry, pixilated footage of attacks in
The blogosphere offers its own, if slightly less dramatic, window. A subset of blogs deals almost exclusively with the war and a significant number are written and maintained by soldiers in the conflict, which has to be a first for war reportage.
Firsthand accounts of wars tend to trickle out, in magazine or book form, months after the events being chronicled. The war blogs offer more immediate feedback.
This immediacy may be changing. Just recently, the Army News Service reported on a Virginia National Guard unit that has been monitoring official and unofficial Web sites for what the military calls operational security violations - information that may help the enemy.
