Get Your Milblogging.com Widget!
Wednesday, February 14, 2007, 12:41 AM
I’ve created a widget that you can add to your blog. It’ll keep you updated on what’s going on in the military blog world.  You know? Milblogs in the news, new milblogs, and other cool stuff in the milblogosphere.  So go ahead and grab it by clicking Get Widget, then add it to your blog.  You can see a "live" example of the widget on the right sidebar (scroll down).

It's hot.

Pretty soon, your readers will be saying there’s something different about your blog...They're not quite sure what it is. And they can’t put their finger on it, but it’s fantastic.  At which point you’ll need a box of tissues to wipe away the tears of joy.

Milblogs in the News: Edwards blogger resigns; blames 'right wing noise machine'
Tuesday, February 13, 2007, 06:59 PM
(USA Today) Political junkies know there's been a huge buzz in the blogosphere over two bloggers hired by John Edwards' presidential campaign. Michelle Malkin and others on the right led the charge after Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan were brought on to the campaign, saying that their past blogging showed they are anti-Christian.

Last night, Marcotte resigned from her post as an Edwards blogger. She blamed:

"Bill Donohue and his calvacade
(sic) of right wing shills (who) don't respect that a mere woman like me could be hired for my skills, and pretended that John Edwards had to be held accountable for some of my personal, non-mainstream views on religious influence on politics (I'm anti-theocracy, for those who were keeping track).

Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, had helped lead the charge.

Memeorandum has collected a huge number of links to blogs where this is all being discussed. Those who wanted to see the bloggers go are cheering:

• "Milblog" BLACKFIVE says "ding dong the witch is dead."

Blog Hosting Service for Milbloggers
Monday, February 12, 2007, 02:52 AM
If you’re gonna milblog, there’s a great new service called Freedom Blog Network. I wish I could take credit for coming up with the idea, but Anthony Cavella came up with it first.  I guess when you spend all your free time rescuing orphan squirrels, it’s hard to do much else.   Speaking of which, sorry for the time off last week, but the little tiny squirrels thank you for your patience.  All 8 pounds 6 ounces of them…in their little tiny diapers, with their tiny, little, fat, balled-up fists pawing at the air…

Anyway, there are a bunch of websites that offer blogging services, but the Freedom Blog Network is the only one dedicated to milbloggers.

More from the Freedom Blog Network:

Let me first start by introducing myself, my name is Anthony Cavella. I am a fellow MIL-Blogger and have been blogging at A Soldier’s Mind for the past year. Since I began blogging I quickly realized there isn’t much support for MIL-Bloggers. The MIL-Blog support that is available is usually spread all over the internet on tiny websites. It is for this reason I have started the Freedom Blog Network.

Milblogs in the News: Battle Bloggers
Sunday, February 11, 2007, 09:22 PM
(CHICAGO SUN-TIMES) Matthew Currier Burden has a Web site he says gets 15,000 hits a day.

He looks forward to the day he can shut it down.

"I'd love nothing more than to not have to do it anymore,'' said Burden. For that would mean, the
Chicago area man said, that "no more of my friends will be dying.''

The site -- www.blackfive.net -- works as a kind of electronic clubhouse for soldiers fighting in
Iraq and Afghanistan. Started by Burden, an Army veteran who served in the first Gulf War, the site includes words and pictures posted by servicemen and -women, ranging from descriptions of battle to laments of boredom and homesickness.

Burden calls it "an oral history of the people involved."

Milblogs in the News: Pentagon Sued Over Milblog-Monitoring
Sunday, February 11, 2007, 06:05 PM
(Defense Tech) “The digital rights crusaders over at the Electronic Frontier Foundation are suing the Department of Defense, "demanding expedited information on how the Army monitors soldiers' blogs," according to an EFF statement.

EFF filed its suit after the Department of Defense and Army failed to respond to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests about the blog monitoring program...

According to news reports [ahem, ahem], an Army unit called the Army Web Risk Assessment Cell (AWRAC) reviews hundreds of thousands of websites every month, notifying webmasters and bloggers when it sees information it finds inappropriate. Some bloggers have told reporters that they have cut back on their posts or shut down their sites altogether because of the activities of the AWRAC.

Well, not exactly. Most of the bloggers I've talked to dialed back their sites because of a more broad suspicion about blogging within the military community -- and unclear regulations about what can and can not be written online.”

Boing Boing is also covering the story.

Milblogs in the News: The Left's definition of a hero
Sunday, February 11, 2007, 05:28 AM
(Forsyth County News) Watada is just the latest in a line of losers abandoning their men, their mission and the rule of law. The left calls this "dissent." The rest of us call it what it is: Desertion.

Many military observers say they smelled a rat when they first heard of Watada's story. Watada graduated from Hawai'i Pacific University in 2003, joined the Army shortly after, went to
Officer Candidate School and incurred a three-year obligation. Wrote Navy Officer Robert Webster:

"This guy graduated from college and then joined the Army, going to Officer Candidate school, after we had already started the
Iraq campaign just to claim it was an 'illegal' war when his unit is called to go. Smells funny to me. In my mind, either the Army gave a commission to an idiot not aware of current events or he planned this all along."

Soldiers making calculated political statements against their own troops? Wouldn't be the first time -- cough, cough, John Kerry. Idiot or schemer, Watada deserves a stiff, strong penalty for his lawlessness. An excellent proposal put forth at the military blog Op-For (op-for.com):

"Relieve him of operational duties and send him to work at Walter Reed, to handle the in- and out-processing of wounded veterans."

Yes, where the real heroes are.

Out of Office for a few days
Monday, February 5, 2007, 07:25 AM
This week I won’t be able to write much, but I’ll be back in a few days.  I’m sure a lot of you are wondering what’s going on with the Milbloggies because I’ve been talking them up for weeks.  Ok, so months. Well, I’m pleased to announce the work is done and the voting system will be uploaded in about a week.  So now, you all can smile.

Seriously, some times I wish I looked like a little cuddly koala bear, so if I did something bad, like say, promised something to my readers months ago...I would just post a picture of myself and you would look at it and say, “What did he promise? Awwwwww, who cares? He’s sooooooo adorable!!  But unfortunately, I’m cursed with this chiseled body and rugged good looks.

Milblogs in the News: Information War - Bashing Baby Killers
Friday, February 2, 2007, 03:35 PM
(Strategy Page) A report on NBC Nightly News has touched off a bit of controversy in the blogosphere. In the initial NBC report, several troops expressed their frustration about opponents of the efforts in Iraq who claim to support the troops, but don't support the mission. One media response to this came from William Arkin, who decried the troops' comments, hoped they had been counseled, raised the specter of a military coup, and then referred to them as mercenaries. The response to the Arkin comments in the milblogging community has been fierce, with big blogs like OPFOR, Blackfive, and others returning fire.

Milblogs in the News: Bloggers donate online win to ballet class
Friday, February 2, 2007, 03:31 PM
(The Daily News) Marcus Penn knew that the baby kicking inside his wife was a girl.

So when he got the news that there were about 40 little ballerinas in a
Camp Lejeune dance class who needed help with recital costumes, the blogger got busy.

Penn, a corporal in the Marine Corps, and Army Sgt. C.J. Grisham, write a popular military Web log called "A Soldier's Perspective."

After hearing about dance instructor Lauren Hill's quest for help buying the costumes (which can cost as much as $100 each), the bloggers put out the word.

Milblogging.com Webmaster Announcement
Wednesday, January 31, 2007, 11:47 AM
I just wanted let you know that I’ll be deploying again.  I’ve got a lot going on so I might not be as active on this website.  Now, I know what most of you are thinking: “Oh dear god, will you NOT be attending the 2007 Milblog Conference?”  Well coincidentally, I probably won’t be attending this year’s conference. So you’ll have to make do with CJ drawing silly pictures of my face on napkins or putting stickers that say “Hi, my name is JP” onto random objects like plants and chairs throughout the Conference Center.

Anyway, if anyone would like to volunteer and help write some content for Milblogging.com when I'm unavailable, feel free to contact me at Milblogging@gmail.com.  And yes of course, I realize my posts are on an entirely different level...But although it sounds difficult in theory to write like me, you’d be pleasantly surprised. You really only need to be brilliant or handsome. Or both, like me.   High-five!

Milblogs in the News: Another Stretch in Iraq Song Strikes A Chord with US Soldiers
Wednesday, January 31, 2007, 10:49 AM
(PRWeb) Songwriter Luigi Cappel has released a new song called 'Another Stretch in Iraq' this month and has already heard from a number of soldiers that they relate strongly to it. The song is about a soldier who signs up for another stretch in Iraq after coming home to find his girlfriend has left him for another man.

Auckland, New Zealand (PRWEB) January 31, 2007 -- Cappel said that he did a lot of research for the song over a period of 3 months as he wanted the song to be authentic and respectful. From his home in
Auckland, New Zealand, he said, "I communicated with a military personnel serving or about to serve in Iraq and also read several recent books, loads of articles and milblogs ( personal military blogs). A major concern for soldiers serving overseas for long stretches is keeping relationships intact and I understand Dear John letters are just as common today as they have ever been. Coincidentally the day I finished the song there was a story at www.milblogging.com about a 19 year old woman who went back to Iraq for another stretch after her relationship broke up, exactly the story the song is telling"

Milblogs in the News: No Third Way in Iraq
Wednesday, January 31, 2007, 09:33 AM
(RealClearPolitics)The very smart military blog Ace of Spades HQ speculated yesterday that Tony Snow might have been launching a trial balloon for an Iraq exit strategy rhetoric when he quoted President Bush's statement that, taking the long view, we won the war in Vietnam because, 30 years on, it is trending capitalist and has become a pro-American Pacific Tiger.

Submitted Story: Interview with Milblogger Capt. Traversa
Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 04:39 PM
(DoD Daily News) I had an interview with Captain Doug Traversa with the help of CENTCOM. If you are interested, you may read it here.

Capt. Traversa is an Air Force pilot in the USAF. His blog is
Afghanistan Without a Clue. He is a wonderful man with a wonderful wife and family. Please read about him and
Afghanistan.

My site is
DoD Daily News. I understand I chose the word 'Daily', but sometimes it gets too hectic around here! Sometimes there are 1-8 entries, sometimes there is none. :( But hey, look at the bright side! At least your eyes can have a rest! Have a nice day.
