As we said from the beginning, holding our conference in conjunction with BWE was a trial. While we're certainly interested in having some kind of presence at future Blog World Expos -- it is the premiere trade show for bloggers, after all -- I think the MilBlog community feels most at home in Washington, DC. Our "official" conference will be moved back to Washington in 2009 and will revert back to the model of the 2007 conference.

The Command Post Firing Sergeant with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery is soon to become a Herald blogger.
In doing so, the 32-year-old from Widewell will make history by becoming the first Army commando to blog direct from the front line of a war zone.
Trevor will be filing back regular blogs to The Herald's website from southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

I attended several seminars but one in particular left me thinking. The 'Milblogger's Spouse Roundtable' was a group of military wives, one civilian and one military spouse/parent. It was the comments of the military spouse/parent that grabbed my attention.
This panelist is military spouse with a son also serving in the military, and deployed to combat. She spoke succinctly about the difference of facing the deployment of a spouse versus that of a son or daughter. She explained that it was a 'different heart muscle,' adding, "No disrespect, and none of us would want this, but a husband can be replaced...a child cannot."

Here’s a picture of me and my longtime pal CJ. He was one of many awesome people I finally had the privilege and honor of meeting in person. I’ll be recapping the Conference all week with photos and stories.
I have a lot to catch up on before I can get back to blogging though. Unfortunately, the robot replica I made of myself and sent off to work last week while I was in Vegas didn’t work out. My boss wasn’t fooled, so all my sweat and tears and 15 weeks of planning, designing and building in my basement right up until the night before I left for Vegas were a waste.
I named him “JP 2008”. But at home, we just call him “Trash can and kitchen utensils.”

See you all there!
Webmaster Update: Needless to say, I want to remind everyone, I have nothing to do with the Voting each year. The only way a person can vote, is to register and sign in. There's no Super Administrator Power that allows me to magically place votes. I built the entire Nomination and Voting system -- so that no one on the Milblogging.com side can affect the outcome -- it's the only way to make it fair and it's the only way I do things. The Voting system was even reviewed by the folks at Military.com before it was applied. Under no circumstances, do I do anything more than answer reader email and provide technical support.
Simple as that.
Shamelessly promoting your blog, as bloggers do each year, is perfectly acceptable. If voters turn out in the first five minutes or the last five minutes, that's completely on the blogger and their voters.
How'd I spend my last twenty minutes while the contest was running? Barely half awake...drifting in and out of sleep so I could be up at 4:30 in the morning to head to work
The only reason the contest was even stopped at 11:59 PM EST (as stated earlier in the week) was because my wife kidney punched me in the side as I made her promise.
Once again, Congratulations to this year's finalists and winners.

(Blackfive) And for those of you attending, we have an invite and instructions (afer the Jump) to attend the BlackFive Party on Friday night, September 19th. The authors at BlackFive wanted to extend an invite to you for the BlackFive Party on Friday night, September 19th, from
To get into the party, there are three requirements:
1. Personnel: I need a name (that matches your ID) to put on the invite list at the PH Club. No name on the list = no entrance to the party. So reply with the names of you and your guests.
2. Transport: To avoid paying a rather large cover charge, the attendees must take either a designated shuttle bus or non-taxi transportation. Shuttle buses will leave the
3. Uniform: Casual (no sneakers, shorts). Jeans have been approved.

Scott Kesterson touched me deeply with several of his posts, and became one of my heroes for his ability to convey the experience. Having had the experience, my respect for his ability has only grown. I hoped to meet him in

The perspective that I gained from Bouhammer gave me a sense of reality and prepared me for the challenges; the frustrations with Phoenix, the need for constant patience with the Afghans, the reality of small teams in remote locations with tremendous shortages and incredible odds to overcome.

Congratulations to everyone! Click here to view the top nominees in each category and to place your vote. You can vote for exactly one blog in each category. Keep in mind, the charts automatically included ties, so in some cases there might be more than 5 top nominees in a Category. Also, we did have to keep Nominations 'Open' for almost an hour longer, while we prepped the site for the Voting Phase. If you experience any issues, please let me know.
Voting is easy. Login to Milblogging.com with your user account. Click on the Voting Standings Chart. Then select a Branch and vote for exactly one milblog in each Category.
Voting closes at 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 14th.
Webmaster Update: Okay folks, the Milblogging.com Server Clock is set hours ahead of even Eastern Standard Time. So even though it says this entry was posted at 4:20 AM, it was posted alot earlier. Unless of course this gift my Mom gave me from Sharper Image last week for my Birthday is actually a flux capacitor. In which case, I'm just gonna travel to the future and check out the Milblog Conference today and I'll report back...
I'm back - Try avoiding CJ on Saturday morning. He's pretty hungover. It took us six hours to find him, and when we did, he was eating cat food out of a trash can. Crazy guy.

I appreciate everyone’s patience this year. If you’ve sent me an email during the day, I apologize for not responding sooner. But I actually have a day job Monday through Friday, and I can’t get online web while I’m at work. It’s really not so bad. I mean, when I graduated college 10+ years ago one of my first jobs was an Administrative Assistant. It was pretty boring, so I'd scotch tape my eyelids open when I started dozing off.
And 'No', I don’t do that anymore. Not because the scotch tape doesn’t work...It’s just that I’m pretty sure my Boss didn’t buy me being awake when he found my face flat on top of the keyboard with drool all over my desk. Sometimes I even snored.
Uh oh, gotta go! I hear my wife coming. She probably wants to tell me about her day.
Better run and get the scotch tape...
