Annual Milblog Conference Moving Back to D.C.
Thursday, September 25, 2008, 07:21 AM
(Milblog Conference Website)  Thanks to everyone who participated in, and attended, the 2008 MilBlog Conference. I want to thank the BWE staff for all of their help and assistance. The staff was wonderful to work with and Rick Calvert, Kimberly and Patti have always been huge supporters of the MilBlog community. We appreciate all of their hard work and attention to the MilBlog Track.

As we said from the beginning, holding our conference in conjunction with BWE was a trial. While we're certainly interested in having some kind of presence at future Blog World Expos -- it is
the premiere trade show for bloggers, after all -- I think the MilBlog community feels most at home in Washington, DC. Our "official" conference will be moved back to Washington in 2009 and will revert back to the model of the 2007 conference.

Thanks to my Mom for the tip.

The Sandbox, a Book Inspired by Military Blogs Wins Award
Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 09:12 AM
(Bouhammer) The book, The Sandbox, which was a selection of the best milblogs compiled by Garry Trudeau and David Stanford, has won a Gold Award in the Anthology Category from the Military Writers Society of America. I am extremely proud to be a member of the Society which allowed it to be eligible for the competition.

In the News: Read Trevor's blog from the war zone
Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 09:07 AM
(Plymouth Evening Herald)  DODGING bullets and winning hearts and minds may be all in a day's work for Sergeant Trevor Skeggs in Afghanistan – but now he has another role.

The Command Post Firing Sergeant with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery is soon to become a Herald blogger.

In doing so, the 32-year-old from Widewell will make history by becoming the first Army commando to blog direct from the front line of a war zone.

Trevor will be filing back regular blogs to The Herald's website from southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

Milbloggers in the News: Military Spouse vs. Military Parent
Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 09:58 PM
(San Diego Union Tribune) I just returned from a bloggers convention in Las Vegas (yup, suffering). Running concurrent with this convention was the 'Milbloggers Convention.' What a great weekend of networking and education.

I attended several seminars but one in particular left me thinking. The 'Milblogger's Spouse Roundtable' was a group of military wives, one civilian and one military spouse/parent. It was the comments of the military spouse/parent that grabbed my attention.

This panelist is military spouse with a son also serving in the military, and deployed to combat. She spoke succinctly about the difference of facing the deployment of a spouse versus that of a son or daughter. She explained that it was a 'different heart muscle,' adding, "No disrespect, and none of us would want this, but a husband can be replaced...a child cannot."

Photo: Me and CJ from A Soldier's Perspective
Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 02:37 AM

Here’s a picture of me and my longtime pal CJ.  He was one of many awesome people I finally had the privilege and honor of meeting in person.  I’ll be recapping the Conference all week with photos and stories.

I have a lot to catch up on before I can get back to blogging though.  Unfortunately, the robot replica I made of myself and sent off to work last week while I was in Vegas didn’t work out.  My boss wasn’t fooled, so all my sweat and tears and 15 weeks of planning, designing and building in my basement right up until the night before I left for Vegas were a waste.

I named him “JP 2008”.  But at home, we just call him “Trash can and kitchen utensils.”

Third Annual Milblog Conference in Las Vegas a Success!
Monday, September 22, 2008, 05:31 AM
I’ve been offline a few days attending the Milblog Conference in Vegas. It was a blast! I’ll write more later today.

That's it for now though, I'm going to sleep and hopefully my blood type will go from Corona with Lime, back to A Pos.

Milblog Conference This Weekend!
Thursday, September 18, 2008, 11:34 AM
(Bouhammer)  Just a quick note to all letting you know that I will be very occupied this weekend. Not at NG drill (that was last weekend), but rather at the Annual Milblog Conference. In fact I will be sitting on one of the panels at the conference. I will be sitting on The New Cadre of War Reporters Panel with JP Borda of Milblogging.com, Christian Lowe of Defense Tech, and Toby Nunn of Toby Nunn’s Briefing Room. Needless to say I am very excited and am looking forward to a great weekend in Vegas.

BlogWorld & New Media Expo and the 2008 Milblog Conference
Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 08:39 AM
(Doc in the Box)  Myself and several thousand regular Bloggers and Milbloggers will be will be trekking across a vast desert (without people shooting at us) by plane, train and automobile till we arrive at a small southwestern town called Las Vegas this weekend for the BlogWorld Expo. Yes, it’s that time of year again for the 3rd annual Milblog Conference (small joke, the last one was May 07)where we have fellowship in person instead of across a cybernetic divide and people get to find out how much cooler we are behind a keyboard. Sponsors of the Milblog Conference include Military OneSource, Military.com and of course our trusty USAA. This year I am thankfully not on a panel (fear of public speaking) and can take part just enjoying the show and hopefully live blogging it (yay, Wireless internet!) Friday night I’ll be attending a pre-conference bash with my wife hosted by my buddies over at Blackfive at the world famous Penthouse Lounge. Here is a list of the schedule and hopefully see some of you there (you can also follow me live on Twitter.)...

Third Annual Milbloggie Award Winners To Be Announced In Las Vegas
Monday, September 15, 2008, 04:14 AM
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who participated!  The winners will be announced this Saturday afternoon at the Milblog Conference.

See you all there!

Webmaster Update:  Needless to say, I want to remind everyone, I have nothing to do with the Voting each year. The only way a person can vote, is to register and sign in.  There's no Super Administrator Power that allows me to magically place votes.  I built the entire Nomination and Voting system -- so that no one on the Milblogging.com side can affect the outcome -- it's the only way to make it fair and it's the only way I do things.  The Voting system was even reviewed by the folks at Military.com before it was applied.  Under no circumstances, do I do anything more than answer reader email and provide technical support.

Simple as that.

Shamelessly promoting your blog, as bloggers do each year, is perfectly acceptable.  If voters turn out in the first five minutes or the last five minutes, that's completely on the blogger and their voters.

How'd I spend my last twenty minutes while the contest was running?  Barely half awake...drifting in and out of sleep so I could be up at 4:30 in the morning to head to work

The only reason the contest was even stopped at 11:59 PM EST (as stated earlier in the week) was because my wife kidney punched me in the side as I made her promise.

Once again, Congratulations to this year's finalists and winners.

Blackfive Writers to Host Pre-Conference Party
Saturday, September 13, 2008, 02:09 PM

(Blackfive)  And for those of you attending, we have an invite and instructions (afer the Jump) to attend the BlackFive Party on Friday night, September 19th.  The authors at BlackFive wanted to extend an invite to you for the BlackFive Party on Friday night, September 19th, from 7pm to 9pm, at the Penthouse Club in Las Vegas.  We'll have a private room (no entertainers) with an open bar and will begin promptly with a proper "Absent Companions!" toast.  After 9pm, we can stay as long as we'd like.

To get into the party, there are three requirements:

1.  Personnel:  I need a name (that matches your ID) to put on the invite list at the PH Club.  No name on the list = no entrance to the party.  So reply with the names of you and your guests.

2.  Transport:  To avoid paying a rather large cover charge, the attendees must take either a designated shuttle bus or non-taxi transportation.  Shuttle buses will leave the
Sahara at 630pm to go to the party (and continue to pick up at the Sahara).  If you take a taxi, you will have to pay the *huge* cover charge at the club (all clubs pay each cab $40-60 per passenger to bring guests so they make up the costs by charging cover).  If you drive yourself, the club is at 3525 W. Russell, just a block or two west of Mandalay Bay.

3.  Uniform:   Casual (no sneakers, shorts).  Jeans have been approved.

So, let me know who to put on the guest list for.  As long as I've got a name by September 15th, we're good to go.  Please forward to other attendees of the MilBlog/BWE conference to ensure we get the word out to everyone.

Read more over at Blackfive.

Origins of a Military Blog: Bill and Bob’s Excellent Afghan Adventures
Saturday, September 13, 2008, 11:17 AM
(Bill and Bob’s Excellent Afghan Adventures)  Very few blogs. Two captivated my attention. One was Scott Kesterson's "KGW Afghanistan Blog," a blog sponsored by a Portland, Oregon TV station and written by an independent journalist who volunteered to go with Oregon's 41st BCT (Brigade Combat Team) as they assumed the TF Phoenix mission. Scott's writing is powerful. His videography is stunning. Scott finished an independent film about his experiences, "At War," earlier this year. Trailers for the film are available at the KGW blog link above.

Scott Kesterson touched me deeply with several of his posts, and became one of my heroes for his ability to convey the experience. Having had the experience, my respect for his ability has only grown. I hoped to meet him in
Afghanistan; it was not to be.

The second blog was written by a National Guard Senior NCO from
New York named Troy Steward. His blog, "Bouhammer's Afghan Blog," gave me more than theoretical information on the nature of the mission. His writing and pictures brought it home for me. Through all of this information, the mission became real, and I began to be a believer. Troy's blog was a huge part of this growth.

The perspective that I gained from Bouhammer gave me a sense of reality and prepared me for the challenges; the frustrations with Phoenix, the need for constant patience with the Afghans, the reality of small teams in remote locations with tremendous shortages and incredible odds to overcome.

Thanks to Troy for the tip.

Nominations Now Closed, Voting is Open in the Third Annual Milbloggies
Thursday, September 11, 2008, 04:20 AM

Congratulations to everyone!  Click here to view the top nominees in each category and to place your vote.  You can vote for exactly one blog in each category.  Keep in mind, the charts automatically included ties, so in some cases there might be more than 5 top nominees in a Category.  Also, we did have to keep Nominations 'Open' for almost an hour longer, while we prepped the site for the Voting Phase.  If you experience any issues, please let me know.

Voting is easy.  Login to Milblogging.com with your user account.  Click on the Voting Standings Chart.  Then select a Branch and vote for exactly one milblog in each Category.

Voting closes at 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 14th.

Webmaster Update:  Okay folks, the Milblogging.com Server Clock is set hours ahead of even Eastern Standard Time.  So even though it says this entry was posted at 4:20 AM, it was posted alot earlier. Unless of course this gift my Mom gave me from Sharper Image last week for my Birthday is actually a flux capacitor.  In which case, I'm just gonna travel to the future and check out the Milblog Conference today and I'll report back...

I'm back - Try avoiding CJ on Saturday morning. He's pretty hungover.  It took us six hours to find him, and when we did, he was eating cat food out of a trash can.  Crazy guy.

Nominations for the Third Annual Milbloggies Ends At Midnight (EST)
Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 11:16 PM
Just a few more hours to place your nominations in the Third Annual Milbloggies. Nominations close at 11:59 PM EST.   Then the Voting begins for the top 5 nominees in each category.  Here are the Current Standings.

I appreciate everyone’s patience this year.  If you’ve sent me an email during the day, I apologize for not responding sooner.  But I actually have a day job Monday through Friday, and I can’t get online web while I’m at work.  It’s really not so bad.  I mean, when I graduated college 10+ years ago one of my first jobs was an Administrative Assistant.  It was pretty boring, so I'd scotch tape my eyelids open when I started dozing off.

And 'No', I don’t do that anymore.  Not because the scotch tape doesn’t work...It’s just that I’m pretty sure my Boss didn’t buy me being awake when he found my face flat on top of the keyboard with drool all over my desk.  Sometimes I even snored.

Uh oh, gotta go!  I hear my wife coming.  She probably wants to tell me about her day.

Better run and get the scotch tape...
