MILBLOGS IN THE NEWS: ALTERNATIVES OF WAR
Thursday, November 10, 2005, 11:54 AM
National Review Online

By Bill Roggio.  It isn't always the strongest gust of wind that bends a branch to its breaking point. More often than not, the limb is broken by the gust that is unexpected and counter to mainstream forces. This same contravening wind is found in independent military bloggers — who, without the vast resources of the mainstream media, manage to remind that the war in Iraq is more than headlines of casualties, car bombs, and IEDs.

IRR SOLDIERS WHO WRITE MILITARY BLOGS
Wednesday, November 9, 2005, 11:31 AM
I enjoy writing about the different members of the military who blog - Marines, Military Wives, Soldiers in Kosovo, Military Mothers, even Military Recruiters.  Who else can we chit-chat about? How about the IRR?

No, IRR does not mean "Internal Rate of Return", so quit asking.  According to About.com:
"Soldiers usually enter the IRR after finishing the active duty portion of their enlistment. Soldiers incur an eight-year obligation upon enlisting. Most soldiers, however, serve four years. That leaves four years in the IRR. Other soldiers enter the IRR after finishing selected reserve duty. Officers are in the IRR until they resign their commissions."

Here is a current list of IRR blogs in the Milblogging.com database...

1.

2.
GI.John
3.

4.

5.

CHRISTMAS CARD PROJECT FOR TROOPS IN IRAQ!
Tuesday, November 8, 2005, 07:09 AM

Kat sent me a truly good story about a Christmas Card Project for troops in Iraq. I thought I'd help her spread the word, and help bring the average number of visitors to her site per day, to at least 6. Hey, don't persecute me, she'll be the first one to tell you. That, or you can check out her sitemeter (at the bottom of her blog) and see for yourself.

That's it for me. Now, go read more about the Christmas Card Project...

Kat writes:

Do you have a yellow ribbon magnet on your car that says, “Support the troops?

Do you routinely SAY, “I support our troops?”

Would you like to be able to do MORE than that to show the troops how much you support and appreciate them?

Would you like a real, tangible way to say “Thank you!” directly to a deployed Hero?

Well, here’s your chance! Make a very real difference this Christmas ~ bring a bit of home to our troops!  Visit my site and find out how!

NEW MILBLOGS ADDED: NOVEMBER 4 - 6, 2005
Monday, November 7, 2005, 01:30 AM

Here's the list of new milblogs added the Milblogging.com database, November 4 - 6.  And yes, I'll be adding more tonight even after this column is published.  Those with feeds to Milblogging.com, please excuse me for adding the "New Sites Added" column a couple days late.  Anyway, some real good milblogs in this latest batch.  Give 'em a look-see. Some milbloggers write "real good" (grammar error to see if my Mom really reads this blog).  By the way, don't just take a look at the Top 100, give some of these newly added blogs your alone-time.

More Milblogs Than You Can Shake a ClueAxe™ at:
Saturday, November 5, 2005, 08:41 AM
This is a blog entry written by The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiller about Milblogging.com.  It's, hilarious.

Posted by Emperor Darth Misha

Now here’s a worthy initiative:

A listing of 505 (and counting) milblogs spread over 15 countries, all searchable by gender, author, country and much more.

So if you want to find a milblog written by a transgendered Inuit paratrooper living in Burkino Faso… Well, maybe not, but you get the picture.

LCs, I give you
Milblogging.com, your one-stop milblog locator for news on military issues from people who actually know what they’re talking about.

(Can also be found under the Dept. of Hegemony by Force on the sidebar)

And if you're too lazy to go read the comments.  Here's what one reader said (true comment):

LC Brilliant Pebble: What if Im the paratrooper in burkina faso? Come see me.

365 and a Wakeup
Saturday, November 5, 2005, 04:01 AM

If you're gonna read any other milblog out there, go read 365 and a Wakeup.  I can't imagine a more powerful milblog than 365 and a Wakeup.  The author, thunder6, has been through the worst of the worst, and yet, he continues to drive on.

Now. Go read 365 and a Wakeup

Here's an excerpt from a recent column:

In the face of so stunning a loss it is natural for the soul to grow weary, and for the mind to wail for that which has been so violently ripped away. It would be the easiest of things to let my heart turn as cold as death and let it pump my veins with frigid and poisonous ice. But that would dishonor the memory of our fallen, and would be an unfitting tribute to men who had given the last full measure of devotion. Instead I will do something far more difficult; I will continue onward and complete our unfinished work. There will come a day when I will weep bitter tears for my fallen comrades and friends, but right now there is much to be done. And it is up to those of us who knew these wonderful men to see it through to the end.

Project Valour-IT, is here!
Friday, November 4, 2005, 02:18 AM
Project Valour-IT is a GOOD thing.

As Blackfive writes: "Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at major military medical centers."

There are a lot of bogus charity sites on the
internet taking money for some real garbage.  Michael Jackson's legal defense, some banker in Nigeria who wants to partner up with me to siphon millions of dollars using my checking account, and much much more.  I get these emails all the time.  Really, how dumb do you have to be?

Anyway, donate to Project Valour-IT.  Listen, nobody cares if you continue to donate to some lame-ass charity that toots Paris Hilton as the next President.  But if you really want to make a difference, donate donate donate to Project Valour-IT.

And Blackfive, I support the Army.  I've had it with the Navy. Had it.  Navy leads the Army-Navy series, 832-636-38.  And, I'm Army National Guard.  We're Army, too.

So, for those of you who want to find out which sites were added to our database each day - you can do it the easy way (for me, at least) and check out the Recently Added page.  Then, there is the newly added RSS feed to our site.  Was there ever a more clever idea than RSS feeds for those blog readers who can't spend 8 seconds typing the web site address into their browser, and actually visiting the page?  I'm being sarcastic.  Anyway, subscribe to our RSS feed, and you can have all this information and more delivered to you.

Army interrogator turns “milblog” into award-winning book
Tuesday, November 1, 2005, 11:09 AM
by Emediawire (press release) - Ferndale,WA,USA

"One milblogger has turned his Iraq blog into an award-winning book, “Saving Babylon: The Heart of an Army Interrogator in Iraq.” Author Paul Holton, who used the name “Chief Wiggles” in his blog, was in Kuwait in the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq. He witnessed the toppling of the regime and Saddam’s eventual capture. Holton’s blog attracted thousands of readers while he was stationed in Iraq, and he expects to reach an even broader audience with his book."

Odd Military Blog of the Week: Love From the Latrine!
Tuesday, November 1, 2005, 11:06 AM
Love from the Latrine is a chronicle of the adventures of the Port o Potty in Iraq! The men and women of the U.S. have a great imagination. And in the military sometimes this is the only way to get true feelings out! This site does not promote defaming government property rather the feelings within!

Favorite Quote: "A lot of blood, sweat, and tears go into the utilization of these facilities! And I really mean that literally!"

Monday, October 31, 2005, 01:43 PM
Personally, if you want to read some of the best milblogs on the internet - with gripping acounts of battle and blunt writing, you need to check out some of the blogs written by Marines currently serving in Iraq.

With searches like "By Branch" available on Milblogging.com, you can easily find military blogs written by members of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and yes, even the Coast Guard.

Take a look at these blogs written by Marines in Iraq. You just might learn something!

1. Warrior`s Voice (Warrior Jason)
2. 5th CAG`s Experiences in Iraq (Stingray)
3. Akinoluna (Akinoluna)
4. One Marine`s View (Capt. B)
5. ACEMNF-WIRAQ: Life through the eyes of a Data Marine (Psybain)

Military Wives
Monday, October 31, 2005, 01:41 PM
That's right kids, military wives blog, too. Well, it's more than just the deployed servicemen that are affected by deployment - it's the wives who stayed behind who must take care of everything at home. These are people who have to contend with the dirty diapers, the four-legged kids, work, long lines at the Post Office, bills, mowing the lawn, and of course, military life. Those who read military wive's blogs, know they have a tendency to poke fun at daily life in the military. Here's what a search on "wife" turned up in the database.

1. Air Force Family (Airforcewife)
2. An Army Wife Life (Armywifetoo)
3. Andi`s World (Andi C)
4. ArmyWifeToddlerMom (Army Wife)
5. Hooah Wife (Hooah Wife)
6. Neurotic Iraqi Wife (Neurotic_Wife)
7. Running on Coffee (Kim)
8. Two Blue Lines (Sheryl)
9. WaitingForAutie (Libbie)

Fallen Military Bloggers
Monday, October 31, 2005, 01:37 PM - Fallen Military Bloggers
We are indebted to all the Americans that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some, have been bloggers. All told, at least three Americans who blogged, have been killed in Iraq. 1. Bob Zanga`s Journey in Iraq (Bob Zanga) 2. Dbfreek`s Xanga Site (Francisco G. Martinez) 3. In the Red Zone (Steven Vincent)

Op Sec
Monday, October 31, 2005, 01:29 PM
Op Sec violations in milblogs are one way to get shutdown. Last week the Army issued new guidelines to milbloggers in effort to prevent security risks. Rather than continue blogging, many milbloggers have closed down, instead of contending with the new guidelines. Here's a list of some of the milblogs listed in the Milblogging.com database that have closed down. We'll keep an eye out for other milblogs in the database that have been shutdown, and update this list.

1. The Daily Journal of Kevin Kelly
2. 67th Combat Support Hospital Docs
3. The Questing Cat
4. Airborne Hog Society

Military Mother Blogs
Monday, October 31, 2005, 01:25 PM
One of the joys here at Milblogging.com is using the Basic Search and Advanced Search to see what kind of milblogs exist. One thing we like is that writers are not only members of the military, but Mothers too. How awesome would it be to learn about some high-speed Army Ranger who wet his bed until he was fifteen? Milbloggers take note - your mothers are writing about you too. And there's at least a handful of them, and they're multiplying. Here's what a search on "mom" turned up in the Milblogging.com database:

1. Daily life of a Marine Mom
2. Soldiers Mom
3. You Betcha I`m a Proud Army Mom
4. ArmyWifeToddlerMom
5. Marine Corps Moms

"Don't thank me, thank your recruiter." Military blogging isn't just about war. No really, it's not just about war. There is an entire world of military blogs. Milblogging.com's goal is to help spotlight all different types of milblogs. Some recently added milblogs to the Milblogging.com database deal with recruiting. Read about what recruiters deal with on a daily basis and the challenges they face. Here is a shortlist of military blogs that show up in Milblogging.com search results for recruit:

1. Adventures of a Detailed Recruiter
2. Army Recruiting Uncensored
3. Confessions of a Military Recruiter
4. Engineer-Recruiter
5. SGT Trueman`s Recruiter Blog
